This island covers 147 square miles and is situated of the coast
of Hampshire, in the English Channel. The island
is noted for its pleasant scenery including a ridge
of chalk which forms cliffs and also the famous stacks of The Needles. It is a
rural island with mixed farming, and around the coastline are many holiday
resorts. Ryde is a ferry and tourist town, and Sandown and Shanklin
are noted for sandy beaches. Ventnor also has a sandy beach,
and a very warm climate as it is on the sheltered, south-facing side of a
steep ridge. Cowes in the north is a centre for sailing.
